First Annual
2001National Hunt Test
& Walking Field Trial

IT WAS A GRAND OLE TIME IN TEXAS ...

The first ISCA National Hunting Test and Walking field trial held November 9 -11, 2001, in Huntsville (appropriately named), Texas was great fun with many young dogs showing off their natural instincts while the more advanced dogs demonstrated their advanced hunting skills and training.  The event started off on Friday with a Versatility Test that allowed the exhibitors to demonstrate that their dogs who perform in the field also have the qualities of a pure-bred Irish Setter.  There were four qualifying entries in this event and they have received passes towards their Versatility Certificate (VC) title.

A training seminar followed led by long-time Field Trialer, Hunting Test exhibitor, and judge Smokey Hiles, who showed many beginning handlers how to get started training their dogs - all of whom showed they know how to point a quail.

On Saturday, the Hunting Test began after a slight delay due to fog.  The first test of the day was the Master Hunting test with one entry.   After demonstrating her steadiness to wing and shot, her ability to retrieve a bird, and her ability to honor another dog on point,

CH. Halsey's Young Man's Fancy, UD, SH, NA, VCX (Fancy) was awarded a Master Hunter pass.  This was her fifth pass so she obtained her Master Hunter title that day.  Next, the Senior Hunter test began and there were three Senior Hunter entries.  Unfortunately, the temptations were many and although the Seniors demonstrated their strong desire to hunt, they were not able to pass this day.  Next up were the Junior Hunters.  This is always such a fun event, for the handlers, dogs, and spectators.  The entrants are usually young, enthusiastic dogs who show off their natural instincts with Irish laughter in their hearts.  You can just feel the excitement in the air as the young dogs find and point their birds.  There were 10 successful dog and handler teams this day and everyone had a great time in the field with their dogs.  Congratulations to Irish Setters Woody, Mira, Ice, Connor, Dee Dee, Glory, Dora, Monte, Rock, and Ms. Patty, who, along with their handlers, earned a Junior Hunter pass this day.

On Sunday, the Walking Field trial began with 5 dogs entered in the Amateur Walking Gun Dog stake.  Once again, the temptations were many and the Gun Dogs worked well but were not quite steady enough on their birds to qualify this day.  Next, the Amateur Walking Derby stake began with 5 entries and one dog, Casshea's Dance With Me (Haley) came away with a FIRST PLACE in the event, earning this young dog her first field trial point.  Congratulations to Haley and to Diane Butterworth, her handler!
