March Madness
- Major Mississippi Rescue |
| "March Madness" has a whole new meaning for
Rescue. Instead of watching basketball players run up and down
the court, we have been watching eight Irish Setters running
amuck in the woods of Mississippi. Around the middle of February
their owner passed away. For some time, the family had been
paying a guy to feed them every four days. Their enclosure was
not secure at all, and they had been left to fend for themselves
for a long time in a large rural, unfenced, area. We learned of
this on March 2nd. Our Rescue team went into action. We were
able to get three of the dogs right away. The others proved to
be a little more of a challenge. We did capture three more, but
the last two have been more difficult. The area is so wooded and
overgrown that it is impossible to follow them, and they are not
willing to come to us. We have been feeding them, and with the
use of a trapping cage, we hope to be successful soon.
April 18 update: The last 2 Irish have been captured!
Clancey and O'Malley are safe and are undergoing treatments for
their fleas & ticks. And then will need additional treatments
for heartworm, in addition to spay surgery.
THANK YOU to everyone for your well-wishes, concerns and
prayers - and your DONATIONS! Without your help, rescue
would not be possible.

In the meantime, the six dogs that we have were full of fleas,
ticks, and worms, and were suffering from anemia. They have all
tested positive for heartworms. The first three are in their
foster homes, with the next three moving in the next few days.
Of course, there have been many helping hands in capturing and
moving all these dogs. Melanie Fuelling, Carolyn Kerner, and
Bonnie Foster have done the yeomen's job here.
There are three things that we will need: 1. Funds - Heartworm
treatment is not cheap. These dogs range in age from three to
eight years. Along with the heartworm treatment, we, of course,
need to get them spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations, and
any other medical care that they may need to pull them through
so they can begin their second-chance at life. 2. Foster Care -
They will need to be in foster care for at least two months. 3.
Forever Homes - Yes, once they are recovered they will need
their own homes where they will continue to get the TLC that we
are now providing them.
From the messages we have received from some of the first foster
homes, these dogs sure seem to enjoy being in a home where
people love them. They are responding quite well.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made to the ISCA Foundation,
or Magnolia Setter Rescue. Other donations can be made to ISCA
Rescue. Email Marilee Larson at

I'm Bella and I’m 9 years young. I've had multiple
litters of puppies – but no more of that nonsense 'cause
I've been spayed. I'm current on vaccinations, house- and
crate-trained, heartworm negative (on monthly preventative),
and microchipped. I have hypothyroidism, so I'm taking daily
hormone replacement and doing well. I have a delicate build,
weigh about 55 pounds, and a have a cute ridge of hair
running down my nose. Don't let the gray on my face fool you
– I am an active girl who loves to play, pounce, and share
what I'm thinking. Foster mom says I'm a real sweetheart,
even though I talk back. I like to snuggle and be petted. I
will gently remind you that I'm there and if you're not
doing something with that hand - 'PET ME'! I like playing
and wrestling with other dogs. I also do OK with kitties.
I've had a bit of a rough time – I had to have surgery to
remove 6 tumors from my mammary glands and had 2 teeth
extracted too. Thank goodness the rescue people were there
to take care of me! I'm looking for a family that will give
me all the petting and snuggles I need, routinely check me
for lumps, provide a couch for naps, and have a nice fenced
yard for romping around in. Bella is in foster care near
Raleigh, NC. Contact Bonnie.

MISTY
I'm Misty, but I prefer to be called "Her Royal Highness".
My birthday is March 04, 2001 and I have an impressive
pedigree. I'm up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm
negative and on prevention, and crate- and house-trained.
And my feathers are finally starting to grow out! When the
rescue people found out I had diabetes, they wanted the best
for me because I'm such a special girl, so I got to go on a
plane ride from Oklahoma to reach my foster home near
Raleigh. Guess what! My cousin Danny lives there, too!
There are benefits - and disadvantages - of living with a
vet when you have a medical challenge (they can be so-o-o
strict). I'm on a restricted diet (Prescription w/d) and
receive insulin injections twice-a-day. Foster mom also
checks my blood glucose levels - yep, I have my own special
doggy glucose meter. Anyway, my diabetes is under control,
my weight is stable (when I was diagnosed, I weighed 42
pounds - I now weigh a svelte 63) and I'm looking for a
fur-ever home. I'm a sweet girl, and my favorite thing is
to snuggle with foster mom on the couch and have all the
other dogs pay homage (Danny just glares - I think he's
jealous). I'm a talker and will let you know if you're not
paying enough attention to me. I also like to give kisses
to show my appreciation. I enjoy going to the doggy
supermarket - the people there tell me how wonderful and
gorgeous I am. And, of course, I get lots of petting.
Foster mom says my new home should not have kitties because
I'm cat aggressive - but other dogs are OK. I prefer to be
with people, but I need a fenced yard to play and romp in.
My new family needs to give me my insulin and restricted
diet, and take me to the vet regularly to assess how my
blood glucose control is doing. Are you the family for
me?? Contact Bonnie at

Texas
Chloe O'Brian
or "Chloe", is a beautiful, talented girl who deserves a
caring, loving home. Chloe is an owner turn-in to an area
shelter. Although the owners gave a reason for the
surrender, it became known they could no longer breed this
bitch and did not want her any more.
This sweetheart of a girl
was born on Valentine's Day of '06, is dark red/mahogany in
colour, AKC-registered and healthy. She has been spayed,
h/w negative and had her rabies shot.
Chloe is energetic and
somewhat birdy. She will get out in the yard and go after
the squirrels and the birds. If the birds have left, she
will chase full-tilt after the shadows of the birds flying
over the yard. She has been trained and knows several
commands: sit, stay, roll over. She will get on her
haunches when a treat has been placed atop her snout and
will leave it there, drooling, until you tell her to take
it. Like all Setters, she is food-oriented but has not
exhibited any great tendency to nose in the trash can or
counter surf. She was not given enough food in the past and
will quickly eat almost anything put before her. As a
treat, she loves to crunch on ice cubes in the summer heat.
Chloe gets along with everyone and everything. She gets on
well with other dogs and does not have any Alpha-dog
issues. Cats do not bother her unless they attack first.
She was in a household with small children and loves to play
with them. In the past she was not allowed on the furniture
but loves a good thick carpet to snooze on. She is
crate-trained; all you have to do is point at it and she
will go in but treats are always appreciated for a positive
reinforcement. She has exhibited no separation anxiety
problems and has remained loose in the house for long
periods or overnight without any incidents.

DYLAN: Dylan is active, but
sweet boy around 5 years old. We've been told that he loves
children and would play with them all day. He sleeps on the bed,
rides in cars and loves to chase squirrels . He is ready for the
right family, and a home with a pool would be heaven to him. He
will even flop and play in the 3" deep wading pool water.
Dylan is offered for adoption by Irish Setter Rescue of North
Texas. Potential adopters should be willing to meet him in
person prior to adoption. Contact Glenna

Molly was
abandoned by her owner and had no place to go until she found
ISRNTX. She is a special needs girl because she is blind. She
had glaucoma and cataracts that went untreated long enough to
destroy the optic nerves in both eyes. Surgery has been done to
correct the pain from the glaucoma. She will not regain any
sight, but will have prospects of a much longer, pain-free life
ahead.
Meanwhile, we are working to teach her how to get around new
surroundings and she's learning fast. In the weeks since she
came into foster care, she's learned 3 different foster homes
including one with stairs! She's definitely one of those dogs
that will reward 10 times more than the effort spent.
Molly loves being with people and is very sweet and silly, too.
She loves children but would probably do best w/o toddlers
underfoot.
Molly is offered for adoption by Irish Setter Rescue of North
Texas. Potential adopters should be willing to meet her in
person prior to adoption. Contact Glenna
